With the development of our society and economy, whole world was facing the water resources scarce prominent contradiction. In order to save the resource of water, we can use the high efficiency scale inhibitor. Hydrolyzed poly maleic anhydride was one of the scale inhibitors which have good prospect, because it was nonpoisonous, biodegradable and has efficiency scale inhibiton.Hydrolyzed poly maleic anhydride (HPMA) has excellent scale inhibition because every C atom in the chain has–COOH which has the excellent scale inhibition. It was produced in an organic solvent in the presence of an oil-soluble polymerization initiator at industrial scale. However this process had disadvantages as following: it needed long period time, high production cost because it needed a great deal of organic solvent and expensive oil-soluble initiator and causing severely environmental pollution and having potential fire dangers and so on. To overcome these problems, hydrolyzed poly maleic anhydride was produced in water as the only polymerization medium in the presence of (M2+/Cu2+) as compound catalyst, by the aid of hydrogen peroxide as the polymerization initiator. Itt was one kind of the environment friendly synthesis.Influencing factors such as recipe of initiator and catalyst working-out the synthesis process were involved. The bromine value and viscosity of hydrolyzed poly maleic anhydride were checked. The experimental results stated that the optimum conditions of the processes were included that the amount of the catalysts was 7:106, M2+/Cu2+=2, the amount of the ratio of initiator/monomer was 1, the time was 150 min, reactive temperature was 105~110℃and the reaction time was 120 min. The scale inhibition of hydrolyzed poly maleic anhydride was characterized by the static ratio of scale inhibition experiment in the different conditions.
