China has a wide territory with abundant water resources. But a large amount of sediment deposited in rivers, lakes and reservoirs has caused urgent demand of dredging which is one of the effective engineering measures to control floods and improve navigation, irrigation conditions and environment.A cutter suction dredger is a kind of dredger commonly used in dredging. One of its key devices is the cutterhead used to cut soils under water. This paper starts with the there-dimensional modeling of cutterhead with Pro/E. On the basis of analyzing the process of cutting soils, we apply the two-dimensional soil-cutting theory established by Dr. Miedema to the analysis of the cutting forces of cutterhead. And by taking a circular cylindrical cutterhead as an example, the cutting processes and cutting forces for the cases with different envelope angles of the cutting arm are analyzed and calculated in detail. Finally the strains and stresses of the cutterhead are calculated by using ANSYS.China still lags behind in the design of a cutterhead. The research of this paper is helpful to the development of efficient cutterheads with independent intellectual property right and can be used as a reference for the designer of a cutterhead.
