Carbonaceous mesophase,a promising precursor for the production of high-performance carbon materials, has been used extensively in the industrial manufacturing of carbon fiber, carbon foams, needle coke, carbon-carbon composites, and Mesocarbon Microbead MCMB .Conventionally ,carbon mesophases form at the early stage of the heat treatment of heavy aromatic hydrocarbon material such as coal tar pitch and petroleum pitch. They are nematic liquid crystal, with complicated structures and various forms, whose structures and qualities vary in a great range with different raw materials and changing processing conditions. During the more than semicentennial development, the raw material used for producing carbonaceous mesophase extended to synthetic resin or synthetic pitch, such as naphthaline pitch, PVC/PE mixed pitch and so on. Nevertheless, the original raw materials are derived from petroleum and coal. People will suffer energy crisis because of the sharp decrease of oil and natural gas resources. Human beings pay much more attention to environment-protection problems gradually. It becomes necessary to search for renewable and clean resource . Cornstalk , sawdust and many other biomass have these advantages undoubtedly. We need to find a convenient and method of producing carbonaceous mesophase from renewable biomass. We develop a new process of preparing carbonaceous mesophase from straw and sawdust, heating in reactant / modifier system. It has properties of optical anisotropy , self-adhering and self-sintering etc. It has excellent self-adhering ability and it will shrink intensely during the carbonization at high temperature, which make high strength and perfect moulding Activated carbon monolith. Our preparation method is simple-processing, low-cost, low energy-consumed. It is meaningful to resources, environment-protection and many other aspects. The carbonaceous mesophases derived from sawdust, cornstalk etc are tested by elemental analysis, POM, SEM, TEM to study the compositions and microstructures . It is approved that the different reaction conditions have different effect on microstructures and quantities of biomass derived carbonaceous mesophase. Meanwhile we do research about the configuration change of the element Si of cornstalk derived carbonaceous mesophase.
