The preparation, structure and properties of halogen free flame retardant ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) highly filled with magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) with the addition of magnesium dimethacrylate (MDMA) and halogen free flame retardant EPDM based on silicone rubber and MDMA were studied in this paper.The addition of MDMA was used to improve the mechanical properties of halogen free flame retardant EPDM highly filled with Mg(OH)2. Three different kinds of MDMA addition methods was used: MDMA added directly, MDMA prepared in situ, MDMA prepared outside. These three different kinds of MDMA addition methods all can improve the mechanical properties of halogen free flame retardant EPDM highly filled with Mg(OH)2. MDMA added directly and MDMA prepared in situ have better mechanical properties than MDMA prepared outside. MDMA prepared in situ addition methods showed that the incorporation of MDMA can improve the mechanical properties of EPDM vulcanizate highly filled with Mg(OH)2 and the vulcanizate have good flame retardancy. When EPDM was 100phr, Mg(OH)2 was 200 phr, MAA was 5 phr, DCP was 1 phr, the EPDM vulcanizate has good mechanical property and flame retardancy, tensile strength is 13.49MPa,elongation at break is 147.8%,limited oxygen index is 30.2,vertical burning is V0 grade.
