Environment monitoring is the main method to know how the environment progresses and in which direction it would go. With the accelerating worldwide industrialization and the booming population, the deteriorating world environment has got the attention of most of the countries on the earth. Governments put more and more funds in the field of environmental scientific researches, projects and environmental monitoring. Environmental monitoring is quite a new kind of research and application field, and there is much work to do to verify the technology of measuring and the reliability of the data acquired through it. It needs much hard and profound devotion to study the precision and reliability of the instruments themselves. This dissertation dwells on soot particle diameter measurement. Firstly, It reviews some common soot-particle-diameter-measuring methods and reveals the strongpoint and disadvantages of each kind of methods. It also studies some popular measuring methods. Secondly, taking the LCD-II soot-density-meter as an example it presents the theory of dispersion method and discusses the software and hardware structure of the equipment. Thirdly, the dissertation talked about the reliable design methods and did some calculation to predict the lifespan of the LCD-II soot-density-meter. Finally, it came to the presentation of principle of calibration and the calibration device.
