This article based on the theory analyses and field experience study on the R2 reversible mill of the WISCO NO.2 Hot Strip Mill, It gives a detailed and rounded analysis of the strength of R2 mill main drive system ,find out the reason of the broken spindle and gives the concerned modified method for the main drive system of the R2 mill.For the R2 reversible mill main drive system cross universal coupling often break down, first of all we carry on the field test of the mill energetic parameters , it gives an important factor for the analyses of the strength of main drive system and study for mill vibration. Secondly, study on the dynamic characters of the mill main drive system, we get the value of TAF, and suggest the methods to reduce the TAF. Finally, analysis the strength of main drive system with 3 dimension finite element method, find out the weakest position is the place of installed balance bearing , there is a fatigue core in the inner spindle ,it is the reason of the broken spindle, counterbalance is not the main broken reason. But if we reduce the counterbalance, we can improve the carrying capacity of the main drive system .Enlarging the round angle of the installed balance bearing can reduce the stress concentration. Enlarging the width of the installed balance bearing has a little influence on the stress.The conclusion brings a new strength theory of main drive system. And the detailed data is a reference in the other mill's energetic parameter calculate, technological parameters'design, device protect and modify.
