Resorcinol, an important fine chemical raw material and organic intermediate, has been widely used for many fields such as agriculture, dyestuff, pharmacy, adhesive, rubber, plastic, electron chemistry. As the rapid development of automobile and construction industry in recent years, demand of resorcinol in the market was increased greatly. In another case, the domestic technics for resorcinol is outdated and the output of resorcinol is low, and with the more focus on environmental protection, the research on novel technics of synthesizing resorcinol having better environmental effects is needed.The synthetic process of resorcinol with isophthalic acid was proposed in this paper and it is studied as follows:Firstly, we calculate some questions on the thermodynamics of synthesizing resorcinol with isophthalic acid, and the results showed: The reaction can be spontaneous carry on to the productions, and the reaction process is very favorable on thermodynamics. Consulted some correlative literature, we expatiated the reaction theory and discussed the mechanism of synthesizing resorcinol with isophthalic acid; the results show that resorcinol can be synthesized through liquid-catalytic oxidation with isophthalic acid.The catalyst and promoter in the isophthalic acid oxidation process were studied, and the effect of different catalyst and promoter on reaction was evaluated. The results show that catalyst (CuO) and promoter (MgO) have better effect on the reaction of synthesizing resorcinol through liquid-catalytic oxidation with isophthalic acid.The synthetic process of resorcinol through liquid-catalytic oxidation with isophthalic acid was explored and studied. By orthogonal experiment, influences of the five selected factors such as temperature, amount of catalyst, amount of promoter, air flow rate and stirring speed on the reaction were investigated; the results showed that infuences of temperature and catalyst on the reaction is most significant, influences of air flow rate and strring speed on the reaction is relatively significant. By the single factor experiment, the preferable reaction conditions were obtained as follow : Oxidation reaction condition:material benzoic acid 50g and isophthalic acid 5 g, amount of catalyst CuO 4g(7.3wt%), amount of promoter MgO 2.0g(3.6wt%), air flow rate 0.3L/min, stirring speed 250r/min, reaction temperature250℃, reaction time 5 h; hydrolysis conditions : hydrolyzing temperature 230℃, hydrolyzing time 120min, ratio of water with oxidation products 10gH2O /g oxidation products. Under these conditions conversion of isophthalic acid was 38.5%, and yield of resorcinol was 19.5%.
