By means of the measurement of surface topography analysis, surface oxygenic functional group analysis, surface contact angle analysis, the effect of carrier's surface characteristics on immobilization and activity of activated sludge is investigated in a systemic way in this paper. The present study explores the surface properties of the microorganism immobilization. There are four aspects in this paper, which cover (1) the influence of different processing method on carbon fibers fixed on microorganism of oxygen consumption immobilization, (2) influence of the facial characteristics of carbon fiber's (CF's) on the immobilization law, (3) comparative study of dynamic and static immobilization speed of microorganism in activated sludge and (4) the application of carbon fibers to the sewage treatment. To begin with, part one of this thesis shows that the amount of activated sludge microorganisms immobilized varies from different methods used to CF. Next, our experiment indicates anodic oxidation is a good method to treat CF and that the longer oxidation of CF is the better immobilization performance of microorganisms on CF. Third, our research also reflects that the largest amount of microorganism immobilization can be obtained when the electrolyte and the concentration of it is suitable. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to deal with three rough conclusions drawn from our experiment. First, good hydrophilic surface of the CF will contribute to the microorganism immobilization. Second, rough surface has positive influence on the immobilization. Last, XPS results show that the microorganism immobilization is greatly affected by acid functional group on the surface. The third part of the thesis discusses that carbon fibers treated with different electrolytes change the speed of microorganism immobilization. Further, static and dynamic experiments reflect that dynamic immobilization is much better than static immobilization. It is claimed in the fourth part of the thesis that the bioreactor sewage with carbon fibers can greatly improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment. , the removal of COD is much larger with wastewater treatment of CF than non-CF wastewater treatment. In sum, our experiments show that oxygenic carbon fibers, which is characteristic of good biocompatibility, high speed of immobilization and large amount of immobilization, is a new microbial carrier.
