Fujian's Minjiang River is the mother river, the research area is the lower reaches of the Minjiang River in Fuzhou, is a multi-functional waters, shouldering the provincial capital city of Fuzhou City and adjacent areas for drinking, entertainment, culture and water for irrigation purposes. In recent years, with the region's rapid development, the greatly increased in population and the ever-accelerating process of urbanization. The water environment was deteriorated by insufficient attention to ecological and environmental protection during the development. However, the water quality relates to the health of Fuzhou sustainable development and people's daily life. Therefore, the monitoring of water quality,as the main basis for the prevention and control of water pollution and evaluation of the water quality ,is particularly important. This paper reviewed the application of remote sensing technology in monitoring of water quality, the principles and methods for monitoring of water quality based on remote sensing. Two indicators which are suspended solid and chlorophyll-a of water pollution were extracted and the change of landuse of research area was studied based on remote sensing. The purpose is trying to find the relationship between the landuse change and the spatial distribution of water pullotion. By building remote sensing model of suspended solid and chlorophyll-a, the writer produced two-phase images about spatial distribution of the suspended solid and chlorophyll-a in 1989 and 2001. Generally speaking, in 1989, the high suspended solids concentration and middle was the main, accounted for 20.89% and 69.58% of the study area waters; suspended solid concentration haved improved in 2001,the middle and low concentration was main ,counted for 49.41% and 36.75% of the total research area .Chlorophyll-a pollution wa smore serious in 2001 than in 1989. From 1989 to 2001, the area of vegetation and construction was increased, water and bareland was reduced. The Increasing of vegetation and bareland in 2001 showed the reason of suspended solid in water was decreased in 1989. with the development of ecnomy , the increasing of population and the urbanization, the area of building was enlarging , more positioned materials were entered the river. So the chlorophyll-a pollution was more serious than before. In the Minjiang River, there is some closely relationships between the landuse and the water quality, the Minjiang River water is the most important factor. From 1989 to 2001, building landuse has become a factor that must not be overlooked.
