Two kinds of cationic surfactants—Tri-quaternary ammonium chloride of maleated rosin were synthesized starting from maleated rosin, epichlorohydin and triethylamine in two different reaction routes. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, dosage of catalyst and ratio of reactants on the yield of product were studied, and the optimum conditions of the two reactions were determined by orthogonal experimental design. The products were characterized by IR spectrum, and their interfacial properties such as the surface tension, critical micelle concentration(C.M.C), krafft point, emulsibility, foamability were also studied. The results show that the synthetic surfactants are well water-soluble and have good surface activities and emulsifying ability. The synthetic cationic surfactants were also applied for preparation of cationic nano-dispersed rosin sizing by mixed with the nonionic emulsifier. The affected factors such as the emulsifier concentration, the stirring velocity, the temperature and the time of emulsifying on the particle size distribution and the stability of dispersed rosin sizing were investigated. The optimum conditions for preparation of cationic nano-dispersed rosin sizing were obtained.
