Since the discovery of the photocatalytic splitting of water on TiO2 electrode by Fujishima and Honda in 1972, enormous effort has been spent on the study of TiO2 under light illumination, due to its various potential applications, such as photocatalysis. The optical properties, in particular the absorption, of TiO2 are essential to its photon-driven applications. Typically, TiO2 absorbs in the UV regime, which is only a small fraction of the sun's energy (<5%). The development of visible-light-driven photocatasts, therefore, has become one of the most challenging topics. Doped TiO2 has been recognized as a photocatalst for water splitting and pollutant degradation under visible light irradiation.Titanium dioxide loaded fly ash micro-sphere photo-catalyst was prepared by sol-gel technique using tetrabutyl titanate as the titanic source and fly ash micro-sphere as the supporter, and characterized by UV-VIS absorption spectrum. The crystal phase and morphology of titanium dioxide micro-sphere were investigated by XRD and SEM. The experimental results showed that with TiO2 loaded fly ash micro-sphere photo-catalyst, prepared in 500℃, degraded >85% methylene blue irradiated by UV-light. In some condition, with AgNO3 or MoS2 NAno-tube mingled Nano-TiO2 micro-sphere catalyst had higher activity for photo-catalytic decomposition (>99%) and the range of the absorption spectrum was wider to that of titanium dioxide powder. Mine while this paper is a summary about the immobilizations of nanosized titanium dioxide photo-catalysis, including immobilization methods, immobilization mechanisms and their qualification.
