Microwave can penetrate into material and causes volume heating. It ischaracterized in uniform heating, low cost, and short processing time. Incomparison with conventional processes in ceramic sintering, it is advantageousin product uniformity and yield, improvement of microstructure, and the abilityto synthesize new materials. In this thesis work, the research and development of a new type ofatmospheric microwave heating furnace (500×500×500, 2.7KW, 2.45GHz,1700℃) are accomplished. The shortcoming in multimode microwave sinteringfurnace is remedied by means of rational choice and fixing of microwave tubeand special design of microwave field type. Through these ways, not only do weget a good sintering result but also reduce the cost. Special structure of theinsulator can reduce energy cost, and expand the scope of microwave sinteringfurnace's application.Microwave sintering of SiC ceramics with high tanδand sintering ofAl2O3 using hybrid heating technology are fulfilled. Hybrid heating has beenproved to be an effective method in solving heating problems of low electricityloss ceramic materials in microwave field. The temperature-increasingcharacters of SiC under microwave field changes along with the times of heating, owing to the reason that both the by-product material (SiO2) and the increasedtemperature change the tanδof the pre-heating body.
