Nanometer SnO2 may exhibit lots of terrific properties deriving from their novel effects such as quantum size, small size, and surface. The properties, applications and preparation of nanometer SnO2 are reviewed on the basis of studying lots of literature at home and abroad. Nanometer SnO2, which has the surface structure and physical function, has been widely used in the fields of function ceramics, information materials and photosensitive materials as a new type of function materials. The preparation technology of nanometer SnO2 are comprehensively discussed in this paper.Based on the previous researches, nanometer SnO2 were prepared by sol-gel method, homogeneous precipitation method and direct precipitation method. According to the results of the experiments, the yield of the nanometer SnO2 is best in direct precipitation method, the diameter is best in sol-gel method.Based on the comprehensive analysis and combined with the present conditions in our laboratory; we focused on the direct precipitation method. Through studying the effects of hydrolytic time, ratio of solvent to material, hydrolytic temperature and calcining heat on the yield and the diameter of nanometer SnO2, the optimum condition are determined. The optimum experiments condition based on the aim of the yield of SnO2 has been reached: the molarity of sodium hydroxide (75mL) is 0.89767moL/L and the molarity of tin tetrachloride (25mL) is 0.63511moL/L, controlling reaction temperater at 85℃keeping 60 minuts, after filtration, washing, and dryness of the deposition, calcinating for 180min on 700℃,and the yield of SnO2is 98.96%. The optimum experiments condition based on the aim of the diameter of SnO2 has been reached: the molarity of sodium hydroxide (75mL) is 0.89767moL/L and the molarity of tin tetrachloride (30mL) is 0.63511moL/L, controlling reaction temperater at 80℃keeping 40 minuts, after filtration, washing, and dryness of the deposition, calcinating for 180min on 700℃,and the yield of SnO2 is 97.29% , the average diameter is 23.6nm.The process of direct precipitation is a promising and recommendable technique for its simple procedure, lower cost and better properties of the products. We can make a conclusion that this process is simple and suitable for mass production.
