Bis(4-methyphenyl) phenyl phosphine oxide(BMPPO) was an important intermediate for synthesizing flame retardant bis (4-carboxyphenly) phenyl phosphine oxide(BCPPO). First of all, intermediate phenyl phosphorous dichloride(DCPP), formed by the reaction of benzene with phosphorous trichloride via the friedel-crafts method, and the catalyst is aluminium chloride. Secondly, DCPP is reacted with toluene, and then oxidized by hydrogen peroxide to form Bis(4-methyphenyl) phenyl phosphine oxide(BMPPO).In this dissertation, the reaction from DCPP to BMPPO is thoroughly investigated, the factors that influence the reaction and optimizing procedure is analyzed. And then the BMPPO was oxidized by KMnO4. DCPP,BMPPO and BCPPO were characterized by FTIR, BCPPO was also characterized by TG. The result showed that BCPPO has higher melting point and much better thermal stability, it can be used as good flame retardant on nylon and cotton fibre. The stability and repetition was validated by scale-up experiments, and getting a better procedure. The two Friedel-Crafts reactions were incorporated to one which is one of the most important reach production. Not only reducing and shortening experiment processes and cycle, but also making good use of materals and reducing the cost. At last, a primary recycle scheme was gained, which making good use of resource and reducing the pollution of the environment.
