In this paper, the reaction between chitosan and itonic acid were reported.Under irradiation of 60Co, chitosan could graft with some monomers, thismethod is simple but highly efficient, and it is nontoxic to the environment. Ithas become a new method to study the modification of chitosan. The mainresults were just as follows:1 The optimal conditions of the reaction were studied, the influence of eachfactor was investigated。The optimal conditions are choosen by Uniform Design. It shows that the optimal conditions were: the proportion between chitosan anditonic acid is 1:4.3, the radiation dosage is 1300Gy, the concentration of aceticacid is 4%.2 The property of copolymer was characterized, the IR, X-ray diffraction,SEM, thermal analysis and element analysis indicated that the grafted reactionwas occurred. IR showed that there is strong characteristic absorption at1724cm-1, the X-ray diffraction showed that the regular structure of chitosanwas destroyed when the reaction occurred, SEM showed that the surface ofchitosan was different from the copolymer. Thermal analysis, element analysisand all those above confirmed that the itonic acid could graft to the branch ofchitosan underγirradiation.3 The adsorptive capacity of chitosan was tested, the factors that could effect the adsorption was considered. It showed that: the adsorption could reachthe equilibrium stage fastly, it was about 120 minutes, the temperature had littleeffect on the adsorption, the concentration of the solution and the acidity hadmuch effect on the adsorption. In the system of several ions coexist, theadsorption was efficient to the Cu2+ compared with other metal ions.4 The drug release delivery experiment of the chitosan and its copolymerwas tested, the experiment in the artificial solution of intestine and tummy wasoperated. It showed that in the artificial solution of intestine and tummy, both ofthem were efficient and could be used as drug release delivery materials forfenoprofen calicium.5 The degradation of the copolymer was investigated in the system ofacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, it showed that the graft copolymer wasdegraded in the CH3COOH-H2O2 co-exist system. The property of degradationcould confirm that the product was the graft copolymer, but not thehomopolymer. Further more this experiment provided a new way to study thegrafted reaction and its mechanism.
