Wetland is a unique ecosystem richest in biological diversity and the most important livingenvironment of humans, has enormous resource potential and environmental, social, economicfunction. The total area of natural wetlands in china is 3484×10~4hm~2, which is ranked first inAsian and the fourth globally. China is one of the richest countries in wetlands resources, hasall types of wetlands, enriches in biological diversity. However, results show that the total areaof natural wetlands has decreased and since 1949 about 2652×0~4hm~2 of natural wetlands hasbeen destroyed. In order to further protect wetland resources and provide scientific foundation fordecision-makers, wetland assessment is very important. This paper reviews the status ofwetland assessment all over the world. At the first time give an integrated assessment of fiverepresentative types of wetlands in china, from the point of view of conservation andsustainable utilization for wetlands resources. The result of which ranked of five grades, express the ability of sustainable utilization of wetlands resources. The grade is given as:excellent, good, fair, poor and very poor.Five study areas were chosen in this research, represented five different types of wetland, including Xingkai Lake wetland, east Dongting Lake wetland, Yancheng wetland, HangzhouBay wetland in Cixi, three-gorge reservoir area in Zigui. This paper used various data sourcesachieved to:(1) according the PSR model, establish an integrative assessment indicator systemfor conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands resources; (2) using AHP methodintegrated with Delphi approach, weight each index of different levels in the indicator system;(3) normalize each index; (4) design a sustainable utilization model, then calculate thesustainable ability of each study area; (5) compare the value of different study area, find outwhat comes the result; (6)according to the practical situation of each study erea, givesuggestive advices of wetland sustainbale utilization. This paper, on the one hand, calculates the sustainable bility of each single wetland, and givesan analysis for each study area. On the other hand, this study also contrasts between differentwetland areas, analyze the differentia of the sustainable ability under different protecting andmanagement conditions. Find out the reason why the differentia formed; give some feasible resolving approaches to maintain sustainable ability. Through comparative analysis, we expectto promote communication and cooperation of wetland conservation among wetlandinstitutions. Moreover, we expect this effort to provide more constructive suggestion ofprotecting and wise using wetlands resources for the decision-makers, promote the harmoniousdevelopment between wetlands ecosystem and social, economic, environment systems. Thisstudy strives for enriching and developing the theory and method of sustainable utilization forwetlands resources, and provides some useful information on integrative assessment and wiseusing of wetlands.
