The Three Gorges Reservoir Project on the Yangtze River is the world-famous largest hydroelectric project. Therefore, the study on numerical simulation of water pollution is of great importance to water environment of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Recently, Geographic Information System (GIS) have made a great development, and based on the combination of GIS and water quality model, using the functions of MapInfo space analysis and visualization, the water quality model make a great progress in visualization. This paper, based on material of hydrology and water quality,developed water quality simulation system based on GIS, The research details of this paper are as follows:â‘ This paper developed one-dimensional water quality model and validated the parameter and model. The difference of calculated value and gauged value is small, less than 20%.â‘¡This paper developed planar water quality model and validated the parameter and model. The difference of calculated value and gauged value is small, less than 20%.â‘¢This paper developed water quality simulation system based on GIS for the Three Gorges Reservoir. By using of the ArcGIS, made of ESRI company as developing implement, by using of the programming language Visual Basic.net to develop program, and by using ACCESS as database, this paper optimized and integrated the water quality system based on GIS for the Three Gorges Reservoir.â‘£This paper r simulated the water quality of the Three Gorges Reservoir after the dam .On the assumption that waste water in the Three Gorges Reservoir area will be almost entirety treated and the water quality of effluent accord with the band B, the water quality, after the finishing of the dam, will be better. The pollution area in the river segment, Wanzhou, will shrink. The pollution area ,COD,NH3-N,TN,TP,in the river segment located in the center or end of the Yangtse River will enlarge obviously, especially at the water level of 145m.The combination of GIS and water quality model, is propitious to storage and manage the mass data, to intuitively show the simulating result, and to statistically analyze the simulating data. This system would be helpful for government decision-maker.
