Energy shortage and environmental pollution are the major challenges in the new century. Hydrogen is known as a clean renewable energy source. Hydrogen production from sewage sludge by anaerobic fermentation not only can solve the environmental pollution of sludge, but also produce clean energy which is friend for environment. So it is very necessary to study on the feasibility of hydrogen production from sewage sludge by anaerobic fermentation.Pretreating sludge or adding soluble organic substances rich in the solid waste improves hydrogen production from sewage sludge. This paper researchs on the effect of sludge pretreated by heatshocking, alkaline or acid, and the effect of addition of tinidazole tablets on hydrogen production, meanwhile the anaerobic metabolic production through the anaerobic process is also all-around studied. In addition, this study makes a preliminary research on the hydrogen production from combination substrates of food wastes and sewage sludge by anaerobic fermentation.In the three ways of preatment in this research, alkaline preatment is the best way to improve hydrogen production, and heat-shocking preatment ranks the second. Among the anaerobic metabolic production from the pretreated sludge, protein is the main production. Saccharide and protein degradation rate in the anaerobic fermentation from heat pretreated sludge, is much less than which from alkaline pretreated and acid pretreated sludge. The degradation of the saccharide during anaerobic fermentation from acid pretreated sludge is the greatest, while the degradation of the protein during anaerobic fermentation from alkaline pretreated sludge is the best. The addition of Tinidazole Tablets has strong effects on the hydrogen production. The addition of 1.40 g of Tinidazole Tablets can reach the best hydrogen production, accompanied by the formation of volatile fattyacids (VFA), mainly acid and ethnol, which is named ehnol type fermentation. The addition of food wastes can improve hydrogen production potential, and the best yield of food wastes and sludge is 1:9.
