Energy shortage and environmental pollution are the major challenges in the new century. Hydrogen is known as a clean renewable energy resource. Hydrogen production from sewage sludge and food waste by anaerobic fermentation not only can solve the environmental pollution of them, but also produce clean energy. So it is very necessary to study on the feasibility of hydrogen production from sewage sludge and food waste by anaerobic fermentation.Pretreating sludge then adding food waste can improves hydrogen production from sewage sludge. This paper researchs on the enriched the hydrogen bacterium effect of sludge pretreated by heatshocking, alkaline or acid, combining with different portion food waste on hydrogen production, meanwhile the anaerobic metabolic production during the anaerobic process is also all-around studied. For the three ways of preatment in this research, acid pretreating sludge(primal pH=12) mix with food waste accroding to 5:5 is the best to improve hydrogen production, and alkaline pretreating sludge(primal pH=11) mix with food waste accroding to 6:4 ranks the second, heat-shocking preatment mix with food waste accroding to 9:1 comparatively worse. Among the anaerobic metabolic production from the combination substrates , protein is the main production when sludge is in high propotion. However, saccharide degradation rate in the anaerobic fermentation while the food waste propotion improves.
