Wood-plastic composites, which are low in price, reusable, environment-friendly, have combined the advantages of both wood and plastics. They relieves the environmental pollution caused by waste plastics and wood, and are widely used in fields of construction, decoration and garden. However, further application has been limited due to their weakness in toughness and melten flow property. In this paper, surface treatment and modification of nano-ZnO and wood fiber were processed. Based on prescription optimization design, the ternary hybrid composites, which consisted of nano-ZnO, wood fiber and HDPE, were fabricated by melt blending method. Via the advanced characterization techniques, such as SEM, TEM, FT-IR, the mechanical properties of composites were tested and analyzed, the effects on structure and mechanical properties lead by introduction of nano-ZnO and wood fiber were studied. The experimental results indicated that, nano-ZnO particles coupled by KH-550 were uniformly dispersed in HDPE matrix with a good interfacial interaction. The wood fiber treated by alkali/coupling agent showed a good interfacial combination with HDPE matrix. Due to the synergistic effects of reinforcing and toughening of nano-ZnO and wood fiber, the tensile strength, impact strength, melt fluidity and processibility of composites were obviously improved. When the weight fraction of nano-ZnO and wood fiber are 3% and 30% respectively, the best integrated performance was obtained, with tensile strength of 28.87MPa, impact toughness of 6.41kJ/m~2 and melt index of 5g/10min.
