Riparian zones are the important transitional regions for exchangeof substance, energy, and information between river ecological systemand land ecological system, and as a kind of aquatic-terrestrial ecotone, they have obvious marginal effect. Riparian areas have importantecological, social, economic and tourist value. Ecological rehabilitationof degraded riparian ecosystems has become a topic of intense interestworldwide. Taking ecology, geomorphology and hydrology as a basis, riparian studies involve a wide range of disciplines and technologies. The waterfront made of concrete in the city makes the plant communityvanish. It leads to destroy the ecological function of the riverbankconnected water ecosystem with terrestrial ecosystem, and makesecological function weaken. Changes in riparian vegetation may bedrived by natural or human forces. There are numerous examples ofnatural forces that cause shifts in the composition of riparian vegetationincluding climate, geology, wind, floods, gravity, and disease. Therestoration of degraded bottom land communities to more native speciescompositions is a complex and challenging problem. However, studieson basic theories and methods of degraded riparian ecologicalrehabilitation in China are very poor, and as a result, the primaryconcepts and problems have not been uniformly recognized. Therefore,in this paper, the auther sumarizes the definition, frnctions, significance of riparian zones, and present conditions and problems on ecological restoration of the damaged riparian in China and abroad.Besides, a integrated renovation scheme is put forward on the basis ofthe analysis of the water quality and environment of Changzhou rivervalley, which will benefit in integrated renovation of the city and therivers around.
