Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) has many excellent properties due to the phenyl structure in the molecule main chain, such as thermal resistant, fire retardant, high mechanical properties, good chemical stability, wear resistant, high shape stability, good electrical property and easy to process. PPS is widely used in electrical and electronics, automobiles, mechanism, chemistry and aerospace industry.PPS is the most frequently used high performance engineering plastic, which is the sixth engineering plastics which is even more widely used than some commodity polymers or engineering plastics. However, most of the time we use PPS polymer alloy or PPS composites instead of using pure PPS directly to improve some of the properties such as toughing and reinforcing, improve the flow performance and reduce the cost. PPS alloy is fast developed recently, and some of them are widely used currently. However, because of the high processing temperature of PPS, which restricts the free choices of another kind of materials in the polymer alloy. Since the processing temperature of PPS which may than 280℃, the other phase may degradate in some degree. It chooses Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as another polymer which is proved to degradate in the processing to prepare PPS/PMMA polymer alloy in this paper. By means of GPC and SEM, the molecular weight, molecular weight dispersity and the micro-phase structure of the polymer alloy is discussed. The effect content of PMMA and calcium carbonate together with the particle size on the composites' crystallization behavior and thermal stability is studied. The effect of processing conditions on the mechanical properties is researched by changing the processing parameters. The difference in the mechanical properties is compared by adding different types of PMMA. The composites are also tested under dynamic conditions by DMA method. This paper brings forward a method which makes use of one type of polymer's degradation to modify high performance polymer, opens a new way in polymer modification and prepares a new type of PPS alloy.
