The principal size for slashing contains modified starch, PVA and polyacrylic size. The PVA has good film-forming property and adhesion, especially for the T/C blend. It had been considered as an ideal size, but difficult to be biodegraded and its waste-water is characterized by heavy pollution. Therefore, it is an emergent task for us to develop a environmental-friendly size to replace the PVA.A new type of grafted starch and its clean preparation processing was mainly discussed, which can substitute for the PVA. The grafted starch is made of starch, grafting some heavy polymers on its macromolecular main chain. For its grafted side chain has good applied performance, so the grafted starch has fine sizing property and biodegradation, and it is considered as the best substitution for the PVA. There are a number of methods to produce the grafted starch, the thesis adopts the dry craft, which is a relatively clean preparation processing for its low consumption of energy and little waste water, as well as simple finishing.A new type of grafted starch has been synthesized in chemical initiator by dry processing, make sure the production is the grafted starch through SEM and IR spectrum, and making sure the factors of the grafting ratio and efficiency through experiments, such as the quantity of initiator, reactive temperature, reactive time, and grafted monomer. At the same time, the grafted starch obtained by orthogonal experiment experiments.In addition, tested the degradation performance (BOD5/CODcr) of the grafted starch and analyzed the results, which show the grafted starch is a clean size.Finally, tested sizing effect of T/C blend, which was sized by the grafted starch with various grafting ratios. Meanwhile, on the sizing compatible stability and size properties, etc. The grafted starch size with the optimal process parameter was compared with the component size with PVA and hydrolyzed starch. In result, the grafted starch size with the optimal process parameter can meet the request of T/C blend sizing and substitute for the PVA by a large margin.
