The sucker rod is a key part in petroleum extraction system with mechanical-driven method.The sucker rod made with precision forging technique overcomes the fatal bug of fatigue fracture of the sucker rod made of jointing the head and the pole for the sucker rod bears the alternate load during its working, and the forming process presents many advantages such as high manufacturing efficiency, stable product quality. The types of sucker rod become more and more various with the rapid development of petroleum extraction industy .However the dies of sucker rod are still designed by handwork and made by conventional methods that restrictthe application of the precision forming process .With the rapid development of computer numerical simulation of plastic processing, it is a perfect way for the designing of process and production of die aided by Finite Element (FEM) simulation.The rationality of die designing is fully validated by the simulation method during the virtual manufacturing process, and hence decreasing the R&D time of the new product, quickly responding the customer's requirements, tremendously shortening the cycle time and cost of the trial and error test.As a result,the whole economic performance and the comprehensive strength of enterprises are upgrading.Based on the theories of 3-D rigid-viscoplastic FEM , this paper analyses the key techniques which have effects on simulation of forging DEFORMation ; After analyzing the DEFORMation features of rod sucker during die forging process and the key design methods of die forging, the reseach selects typical sucker rod CYG3/4″HY which is produced to simulate the forging process with the finite element analysis software DEFORM 3D.The results indicate the temperature field, inner stress field, strain field,metal flowing law during the forming procedure. The forming status, causation of defect of workpiece is analysed.The practical production results are consistent with conclusion from FEM simulation, which indicates that the established FEM system is reliable; all the results can offer a qualitative and quantitative theoretical basis in optimizing the process of forging of sucker rod improving forging mold's conformation.
