With the great development of economy, there is increasing need for petroleum. Since the limited ability of petroleum production from land and offshore is too difficult to fulfill the consuming, China have to import a lot of petroleum every year, which will cost lots of money and will bring potential risks. There is wealth oil and gas resource under the South Sea of China, however, we don't have enough technology of deep water exploring at present.With many advantages such as stable, safe, motive, easy to be detached and transported, economical and so on, Spar platform is considered to presents he developing direction of deep water oil exploring platform in future. Since now, Spar in foreign countries has gone through the first generation Classic Spar platform and the second generation Truss Spar platform, today it developed to the third generation Cell Spar platform. However, spar platform is a brand new generation. Therefore, its throretical problems and engineering technology still need long time to develop.In the background, the project of"Dynamic Characteristic and Experimental Research of Spar Platform"is admitted by Shanghai Committee of Science and Technology, research on the performance and design of spar platform carried out by State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University The project team collects, analyzes and digests relevant information about spar platform abroad. And then, according to the fabrication ability of domestic shipyards, the group proposes a new concept spar platform——Cell Truss Spar (for short, C-T Spar), which is suitable for the situation of our country. This paper is one part of the project.Firstly, the paper introduces the development and structural property of spar platform briefly, and then compares the relevant rules of specific institute for ocean resource exploring and classification societies, investigated the criterion of structural design for Spar platform to building a foundation to make guide of structural design and to offer basic technical support for the R&D of Spar platform. Secondly, the paper introduces the new concept spar platform——C-T Spar briefly, and presents the C-T Spar designed by State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which will be installed in 1500m depth area in South Sea of China. Reference to relative rules for design, the structural arrangement style is investigated according to the platform's data such as principle dimension and general arrangement, the structural parameters of the C-T Spar are also listed. In the end, based on inertial structural design of the hull, this paper predicts wave load by applying DNV/Wadam according to API rules. Calculation of wave load and flow load under detaild environment condition of South Sea of China are also performed, structural deformation and stress distribution rules of the hull is studied by running the FEM calculation of global strength of the hull under working condition. It is the first time domestically to calculate the global strength of C-T Spar platform. The contents in this paper can offer technical support to further research of deep water platform.
