Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology is the key of advanced manufacturing technology. Its level is the most important indication of a country's industrialization. In recent years, with the rapid development of PC technology, the NC system is developed to high-speed, high-precision, open, modular and intelligent. Among them, the research on open CNC system has more fruitful results. Compared with the traditional numerical control system, open-NC system uses the general PC resources. There are great advantages in the hardware architecture, the software function and the interchangeability, to overcome some disadvantages such as the hardware systems are not compatible, modules and communication mechanisms from different manufacturers is relatively independent each other. It can be said that open CNC system is another great change for the development of the NC system.Dr. Chen Zong-Yu, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, analysis the limitations of open CNC system "PC + Motion Controller" and proposes a fully distributed NC system architecture. In this issue, based on the new fully distributed NC system, do some researches focus on the ARM-based Intelligent Motion Controller, and build a platform to do some system performance test. The content of the study are summarized as follows:1) Software and hardware constitutions of intelligent motion controller based on ARM;2) The realization of High-speed and mass data communication;3) Servo-control strategy and synchronization among controllers;4) Automatic fault detection and prediction in intelligent motion controllers.Research on this subject will be helpful to the full distributional numerical control system's and provide one kind of new solution of intelligent numerical control unit for the manufacturer of numerical control system, also provide a good Solution of renovation for the ordinary numerically-controlled machines. This research is an important part of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University 985 Project "high-speed numerical control system and the key technology research".
