Being a typical ceramic material, YAl3(BO3)4(YAB for short) has excellent mechanical, thermal and optical properties, which is a promising material used as phosphors and laser media. It is a non-linear optical crystal with excellent chemical and physical properties, such as broad transparency range(down to 200nm),good incorporation of rare earth ions, large nonlinear optical coefficients, and proper refractive index dispersion for phase matching. So we investigated the preparation and the property of YAB doped with rare earth ions.Compared the methods of synthesizing phosphors, YAB:Nd3+和YAB:Eu3+ were synthesized by sol-gel combustion method, and were characterized by XRD and SEM.The main results in this work were summed up as follows:(1) The sol-gel combustion method of YAB powders using metal-nitrate and citrate as raw materials is studied in this paper. Pure phase of YAB can be obtained by this method at 1100℃, which is 100℃lower than that needed in the other methods, and the powers consists of relatively homogeneous particles with an average diameter of 50nm. So, nano-sized particles can be synthesized using this method.(2) The luminescent effect of the phosphor was discussed by the way of excitation and emission spectral analysis: the biggest excitation peak locates at 240nm and the biggest emission peak is at 615nm produced from Eu3+ transition emission of 5Do-7F2. It has a better color purity than (Y,Gd)BO3:Eu3+ and is a good red-emitting phosphors.(3)vacuum-sintering of YAB:Nd3+ transparent ceramics was studied preliminary.
