Gears are the basal part of mechanical transmission and are widely used in various fields, such as vehicles, machine tools, aviation. With the development of gears orienting toward higher precise, speed and strength, lower noise and miniature, it is required that the higher material and manufacturing technology. The honing is an important precise and finish machining approach in the gear manufacturing process. As a good many limiting factors of the conventional honing process, improving honing level and efficiency is becoming an obstacle. The ultrasonic machining introduced into the precise and finished machining of gears can open widely application field of ultrasonic technique and take full advantage of the characteristics of honing technology.Ultrasonic honing of gears (UHG) is a new way of hard face gears machining. The way is brought forward basing on study of gear machining long-term. The study of technology is imbursed nation nature science fund.In this paper, how to realize UHG is simply explored, the main contents include:First, the main research result in the gear-honing and ultrasonic machining is analyzed and generalized from the domestic and international fields and the advantage and the possibility of this new craft method in the UHG is elaborated.Second, the principle and equipment of ultrasonic machining is mentioned, and the representation of principle and attachments of ultrasonic honing is brought forward. The effects of the insensitive vibration cutting mechanism on the honing quality and precise have been analyzed. Vibratory tailstock of UHG is designed to prepare for the experiment on UHG.Next, the structure of vibration system is brought forward, the composite vibration system (CVS) composed of composite horn and gear. Summing up the design methods of horn, the parameter relation of CVS is analyzed using four-terminal network method. Normal modes of the CVS are analyzed using the finite element software ANSYS, providing the theory foundation for the designing of composite vibration system; and impedance character of CVS is tested using impedance analyzer, the result of design is close to the one of test.And then, analyzing the factories contributing to the removal rate, the comparison of the UHG and the conventional honing by the experiments is carried out.Finally, the sum-up and prospect are carried out, and the deficiencies of the paper and the later development orientation are brought forward.
