Ion chromatography (IC) was set up by Hamish Small et al. in 1975 and became an important analytical technique in the fields of environmental science, chemistry and food etc. depending on its some advantages, such as good ability for separating anions and cations, little injection volume and good selectivity. To select a sensitive detector is an important step in IC analysis. As a current detector for analyzing ions, conductivity detector is applied extensively to analyze ionic substance in IC. However, Amperometric detector is paid more attention depending on its merits of fast response, high sensitivity, simple instruments and easy preparation of electrode.Studies on carbon nanotubes (CNT) become a hot topic in the world due to its unique one-dimensional tubular structure and subtle physical and chemical properties. Compared with other areas, the application of CNT in analytical chemistry has just been studied recently. In this dissertation, using CNT as interfacial material, we constructed the functionalized CNT electrodes for the ion chromatography (IC) column using Amperometric detector for separation and detection. This work is the first effort for the study of CNT in ion chromatography Amperometric detection, and may be of great significance for applying nano-material further.The research work was divided into two parts in this paper:The first part of the paper reviewed ion chromatography, Amperometric detection and the preparation of CNT, the structure of CNT, the modification of CNT and its application.The second part of the paper is the determination of various compounds with IC by Amperometric detection using the functionalized CNT as electrodes. In these experiments, biological and environmental samples were also detected. A further study on the application of combining ion chromatography Amperometric detection and CNT electrode was also performed.
