As an advanced manufacturing technology, High Speed Machining (HSM) has become an important trend of modern NC machining technology and the greatest breakthrough in manufacturing after NC technology. Because of its advantages, HSM technology has been developed and used very quickly and widely in developed countries. A deep research on the HSM mechanism combined with machining practice is one of our urgent tasks, which is very important to both basic and application research for the manufacturing. Combined with the project of the Tianjin College Science and Technology Developing Found, Research on the Critical HSM Technology of Difficult-to-cut Material (No.20041108), experimental research on a typical difficult-to-cut material 1Cr18Ni9 is done from machining practice in this paper, which is expected to guide actual production. The main works are as follows:1) Machining of difficult-to-cut materials, the developing situation of HSM technology, research methods and architecture of HSM are summarized and related research is developed after that;2) Experimental design and the orthogonal experiment of HSM stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9 are done and experimental data is collected;3) Qualitative analysis (range analysis) and quantitative analysis (multiple linear regression, stepwise regression analysis and RBF neural network) about milling forces and roughness are carried out. Those analytic methods are compared. The main factors that affect milling forces and roughness are ascertained and the predictable models are established;4) Cutting parameters are optimized by taking milling forces and roughness as objectives respectively and the combination of cutting parameters that can guide actual production effectively is obtained; In the end, the whole work is summarized and the direction of further study is put forward.
