In recent years, capillary electrophoresis has played an irreplaceable role for theanalysis of chiral compounds. Compared with other analytical methods, capillaryelectrophoresis processes the merits of flow-volume requirement, higher efficiencyand less labor-intensive pre- or post-column derivation steps. Enantiomers areoptical isomers processing similar physicochemical properties and thus difficult to beseparated from each other. Their separation can be obtained by forming stable orlabile diastereoisomers with the chiral environment, respectively. Separation ofenantiomers by capillary electrophoresis requires introduction of additives to thebackground electrolyte which can recognize both enantiomers stereo selectively withdifferent binding constants. The use of cyclodextrins (CDs) for different host–guestcomplex of enantiomeric pairs of compounds is by far the most common strategyemployed for chiral separation by capillary electrophoresis. In order to resolve the problems in recovery and purification of CDs, a novelchiral selector, sulfated copolymer of acrylamide–β–Cyclodextrin (SPA-β-CD), wassynthesized in this paper. The substituted degree of the SPA-β-CD was homogenousin statistics. In other words, although the substituted degree of every CD in apolymer chain is different, there are no obvious differences of the degree amongpolymer chains. The SPA-β-CD has good solubility in water and was applied in chiralseparation successfully. Experimental results indicated that the chiral selector candecrease the band broadening efficiently in the electrophoretic process and thetheoretical plate number over 200,000 N/m was obtained.Furthermore, Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) was used onwide-bore electrophoresis system (WE). The biggest advantage of the WE system isits potential as a preparative or semi- preparative electrophoretic separation techniquedue to its bigger sample loading capacity. Good enantiomeric separations wereobtained when the column was applied in chiral separation both on these twoattempts.
