Karst Rocky desertification as a large-scaled ecological degeneration which may result in disastrous consequences, matters to the well-beings of the nation and the people. To study the Rocky desertification condition at different times and find out the development characteristics from the distribution at those different periods are of great importance to applications such as to provide resources and proof for desertification management , territorial region planning and management as well as for the sustainable social and economic development. This paper takes Ziyun County of Guizhou Province as its AOR (area of research), basically utilizes the plane-shoot topographic maps of 1:50000 scale of 1962 and Landsat TM images of 1993 and 2001, creates time-spanned desertification database of AOR by means of GIS and RS technologies and studies the distribution of karst desertification and its developmental characteristics form 1962 to 2001 by analyzing the spectrums and conducting overlay operations. Main research contents and achievements are as follows: 1 Desertification data of 1993 and 2001, which based on the TM images of these periods and the index and standards of desertification and its intensity level identification, achieved by means of people-machine interactive interpretation and field validation.2 Rocky desertification sensitivity map of 1962, which analyzed and achieved by adopting a supervised classification and manual operation integrated method to extract AOR's land use in 1962, briefly based on the plane-shoot topographic maps of 1962.3 Rocky desertification distribution map and database of 1962, achieved by logically judging and managing the data describing desertification sensitivity and the changing of land use as well as means of utilizing spectrum analysis and GIS spatial analysis measures.4 Conduct overlay analysis of the AOR's rocky desertification data of different times by utilizing methods of spectrum analysis and GIS spatial analysis operations and study the rocky desertification.distribution and developmental characteristics of karst area of different slopes and landforms of different times.
