The sonic environmental quality had been investigated by objective measurements and extensive questionnaire survey to X University in this paper. The measurements to noise was characterized by equivalent continuous A sound level (LAeq). The weekdays in campus was divided into 4 sections in teaching zones according to the characteristics of the sonic environment in a campus. The survey of a campus noise perception was mainly aimed at students and staff in school. The extensive questionnaire surveys were involved with more than 250 students or staff to ask them to fill in questionnaire without any hints investigating their campus noise perception. The evaluation methodology of Noise Rating Curve in ISO was analyzed too. The calculation of Noise Rating Number (NR) was programmed utilizing Visual Basic, as well as the constant a and b were expanded to 31.5 Hz (a=55.4, b=0.618). Two methods in calculating the NR are presented, one of them, i.e. seeking the maximum of each NR calculated in each octave band separately, requires less time than another one. With the improvement of the requirements in accuracy, in some occasion, it is not sufficient in the use of 1/2 octave, so the constants a and b, in 1/3 octave within 31.5Hz and 8000Hz should be obtained. Then the noise rating curves were simulated by numerical analysis method. The sonic environmental quality has been evaluated utilizing the methodology of matrix assessment easily. The acoustic comfort index has been introduced to analyze the acoustic comfort degree on campus. The evaluation results agree with the perception of staff and students. By utilizing the acoustic comfort index (ACI), the quality of the sonic environment can be characterized easily, which will be beneficial to the campus planning and designing and will create a harmonious environment in a campus.
