In this paper, the hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics of a new type structured packing of rhombus mesh frame applied in extraction process was studied. InΦ50 mm packed extraction columns, two extraction systems with different interfacial tension, kerosene-benzoic acid-water and 30%TBP(kerosene)-acetic acid-water were chosen to examine the dispersed phase holdup fraction, flooding velosity, Hoxp (apparent height of mass transfer unit based on plug flow and continuous flow) of structured packing-Wang-X,Wang-X&Y ,Φ10 mm pall ring packing andΦ6.4 mmθring packing under various operation conditions.Results show that, the Hoxp of Wang-X structured packing is less than that of pall ring andθring at a minimum rate of 25% and 20%; the Hoxp of Wang-X&Y complex structured packing is less than that of pall ring at a rate about 35%.In addition, pilot-scale test was taken in Henan shenma nylon chemical industry limited liability company. In aΦ150 mm packed extraction column, cyclohexene-dimethyl acetamide (DMAC)-water system was chosen to examine the characteristics of Wang-X andΦ12 mm pall ring packing.Using Wang-X packing, the extraction fraction of DMAC is about 8% higher than pall ring, though the mass loading density of the rhombus mesh frame packing is only 38% of the pall ring.Besides these, the manufacturing of this packing is easy.It will be widely used in extraction field.Investigation of single drops were carried out in a square organic glass tower. Results show that, Wang-X packing has strong ability in breaking up of the droplets, while Wang-Y packing can enhance the coalescence of droplets. Wang-X&Y complex structured packing can improve the dispersion-coalescence frequency of droplets and enhance the mass transfer. According to the investigations of single drops on rhombus mesh frame packing and another Zigzag packing, based on the characteristics of this packing, optimization and design principles on this packing and distributor were suggested.
