Titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace,navigation and other industries due to their excellent mechanical properties. Because of the little thermal conductivity, high chemical activity, large friction coefficient and so on, the problems occurred during the milling operation such as high cutting temperature, large unit force and serious tool wear, leading to less applications of Titanium alloys. Plunge milling is also called Z-axis milling, which is one of the most effective machining methods for high efficient metal removal, especially for the hard-machinine-materials. Thereforce, taking the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V as the research object,and the machining performance of four kinds of cuuters in plunge milling Ti-6Al-4V are studied in this paper. Furthermore, on the base of Fuzzy mathematics theory, make a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation on them.Firstly, according to the characteristic of plunge milling, a testing and analysis system platform is designed. The cutting force, ibration and tool wear are tested in plunge milling process.Secondly, the cutting temperature in plunge milling titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is measured by an embedded emi-artificial thermocouple. The effects of cutting speed, feed rate, tooth number on cutting temperature are studied.Finally, considering each influencing factor, the model of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation for performance of inserts is established based on fuzzy mathematics theory. The two-band fuzzy comprehensive evaluation is applied. Not only are all of the influencing factors such as cutting temperature, cutting force, tool wear, vibration considered but also all the information of every evaluation stage is reserved, which makes the evaluation result accord to the practice..The conclusions drawn from the above experiment researches could provide production practice with important indication.
