Since the conception of sustainable development was gradually acquainted, how to measure the sustainable state of development has always been an important subject, whose core is whether the human load stay within ecological carrying capacity or not. The ecological footprint method put forward and improved by William, Canadian ecological economist, and Wackernagel, the former postgraduate, is a new method of quantifiably measuring the extent human using nature. Through following the tracks of consumption of natural resources and energy of a region, these consumption patterns provide information of areas, showing each type of land necessary for providing these material resources. Then comparison is made between these different areas which provide natural resources, we can quantifiably judge whether the development of an area beyond its ecological carrying capacity.Tianjin is one of the four Municipal Cities of our country, is the door of opening-up in the north of our country, is an advanced modern manufacturing and R&D transformation base, is an international shipping center and logistics center in the north of China, is the third pole of Chinese economic growth, that is, the economic center of economic Circum-Bohai Region, and its sustainable development state will produce a very big influence to itself and its surrounding cities even the whole country.The ecological footprint analysis has gradually popular on account of the relatively scientific and perfect theory, innovative thoughtway and wide adaptability. It was used by this paper, the ecological footprints of Tianjin were calculated in the period of 1996~2005 on the basis of the statistical yearbooks of recently years. According to the calculated results, the ecological footprint of Tianjin was dynamic analyzed. The results shows that the total demand of the ecological footprint of Tianjin increased about 47% from 17523731.52hm2 to 25763143.00hm2, while the total ecological carrying capacity increased about 41% from 4285818.80hm2 to 6240269.00hm2, there are large ecological footprint deficit every year, and the ecological footprint deficit increased continually, it indicated that the consumption of the natural resources has already exceeded the reborn ability of natural ecosystem in Tianjin, the development of Tianjin is keeping off an unsustainable state. But the ecological footprint per ten thousands yuan GDP decreased continually in 10years,and the ability of economy development is strengthening gradually. So, the relevant measures must be taken to reduce the ecological footprint, and enhance the capacity of sustainable development.
