A new measure about the safety status of coal industry was issued recently by Ministry of Coal Industry, which enforces the use of the flame retardant and anti-static material in stead of metal pipe in underground mine. The plastic pipe has some advantages, such as acid resistance, alkali resistance, oil resistance, corrosion resistance, light weight, low cost and long service life (2.5 times longer than steel), etc, which are much better than those of the steel pipe. However, the plastic pipe generates static charge easily, which will be accumulated and result in spark discharge probably. And this will possibly become the ignition source for the coal dust and gas explosion. Meanwhile, the plastic pipe is inflammable, low pressure resistant and low impact resistance. Hence, in order to replace the steel pipe with plastic pipe safely and reliably in coal mine, the flame retardancy, anti-static performance as well as the mechanical property should be modified. In this study, the polyethylene (PE) was chosen as the matrix resin, and the compounded system with excellent flame-retardant and anti-static additives was used. Special surface treatment technology was carried out to solve the compatibility between the flame retardancy and the antistatic performance. The optimum ratio between PE with different grades and the compounded additives, as well as the technological conditions were determined. The composite, which has the flame retardancy and anti-static performance simultaneously, was prepared via melt-blending process with twin screw extruder.
