The runout table cooling process is one of the most important steps in the last phase of the hot rolling process, where hot plates are cooled by laminar flow water on the runout table according to the technical requirements. This process can not only reduce the total cooling time, but also significantly increase yield, and improve the strength and comprehensive property of steel, which results in significant economic benefits for the manufacturers. Based on the heat transfer mechanism of the runout table cooling process, the thermal field model of the runout table cooling process was developed using the finite element method and the ANSYS software. The time temperature evolutions, cooling rate and the thermal field at specified time steps of various steel grades was given by simulating the thermal field of the runout table cooling process under various operating conditions. The main contributions of the thesis are as follows:First the heat transfer mechanism of the runout table cooling process was studied and the finite element-based model of the transient thermal field was developed. Three-dimensional heat conduction within the steel plate was taken into consideration by partitioning the plate into small elements and using linear interpolation and the relationship among elements. The element equations were combined into the system of equations, and the finite element-based model of the runout table cooling process was established. Then simulation experiments were conducted in the ANSYS environment based on the developed model of the runout table cooling process. Plate-air convection, heat radiation to the air and the heat conduction within the plate were considered during air-cooling. The plate-water heat convection, and the heat conduction within the plate were considered during water-cooling. Simulation experiments with various steel grades under various operating conditions confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed finite element-based model of the runout table cooling process.
