Sinter is one of the most important raw materials for iron production in blast furnace. Technical and economic factors of pig iron production are affected by the strength of sinter. It has been proved in industrial practice that high strength and well-proportioned size of sinter is an important precondition to get an enough permeability of the stock column in blast furnace.The first work in present research was to develop a testing equipment of sintering. A small sintering cup was developed to produce samples for latter research. Carbon containing material and airflow are used in small sintering cup as in classical cup and heat replenishing at cup side was also additionally installed. The scale of the cup was consumedly reduced. Therefore, the sintering simulation of the small cup is better and the work on it is easier.The second work was to make different samples using small sintering cup and to research their properties. Compression samples for latter research were made using typical products from the small cup and industrial workshops.The third work was research on the relationship between temperature, reduction degree and compression strength of sinter using a high temperature compression testing machine with adjustable atmosphere. Strength in the temperature range of reduction pulverization at low temperature was carefully checked. Influences of phase change of calcium orthosilicate (2CaO.SiO2) and decomposition of calcium ferrite on sinter strength were discussed.Variability of sinter strength in blast furnace was roundly described, two key zones, in which damage or pulverization potential of sinter is intensive, were given and damage possibilities of different sinters were discussed in this paper. The results can be used for checking of sinter quality, confirming of sintering process and operating of blast furnace.
