In this paper, the microstructure of graphitizing carbon black and carbon black was investigated by SPM. The surface roughness and particle size of graphitized carbon black were measured and compared with that before graphitization. Results showed that although appearance of carbon black did not change obviously, the degree of surface roughness decreased. Images were deal with software, obtaining date of surface roughness and average surface roughness. The specific surface area was also measured. Results indicated that date of surface roughness had a relation with reinforce properties, the larger of the roughness date the better of reinforcing effect of carbon black.The Dynamic Force Mode scanning operation was used to observed carbon black and the surface appearance of aggregate was obtained. Slit Island Analysis based on fractal theory was used to analyses images and fractal dimension of carbon black was also calculated. The difference between carbon black and graphitized carbon black was obtained. Results showed that surface of carbon black have fractal characteristics. In mesoscopic scale, with the roughness reduced and date of DBP decreased, the fractal dimension of carbon black also decreased, so this indicated there was a corresponding relation between surface fractal dimensions, surface roughness and reinforcement properties.TG-DSC analysis was used to investigate carbon black as well as graphitized carbon black. Results showed that thermal stability increased after it was graphitized. There was a relation between surface roughness and surface energy. Distribution of high energy point was the same as the surface roughness, asymmetry. Thermal weightlessness ratio changed with the changing of specific surface area and surface roughness. Surface roughness had a relation with thermal weightlessness and reinforcement properties.Surface morphologies, surface roughness, thermal weightlessness dimension and reinforce properties of carbon black were studied respectively in this paper. The relation between them was discovered and micro- performance was banded together with macro-performance then a very important performance—surface roughness was obtained. In addition, a new method which used to measure surface roughness was advanced, so there was a new analysis method and thought on the microcosmic surface morphology with SPM in carbon black filed.
