With the development of machinery, electronic industry, auto industry and aerospace industry etc, especially recent achievement of auto industry of our nation provides a wide space for application of metal die castings. Although die casting die has advantages of high profit and efficiency, it is also a forming process which has high reject rate and is difficult to assure the product quality. It is indicated that the design for gating and exhausting system (GES) of die casting die is one of key factors for die casting product quality in practical production. Meanwhile, one of the important contents of technological research in the die design is how to design a rational structure of GES according to different structure of various die castings.Based on the deep analysis of die casting process filling theory and current developing situation of its design technology, the method of modern optimization design combined with CAE technology was used in optimization design of the GES for die casting die according to real characteristics of die casting process. The optimization design model of gate position for such castings as thin-wall flat and circle cover with a hole were constructed on the principle of the shortest flow distance of metal liquid in the die cavity by analyzing metal filling flow process for various kinds of die casting die cavities. Furthermore, optimization design process of GES of die casting die for wrench with a slender feature was carried out. It is indicated that the liquid metal filling pattern is more reasonable and die casting quality obtained by using optimization design method is better than those did not use optimization design method. Simulation software ProCAST was used in simulating filling process of die casting die for wrench, and the results show that the optimization model is effective, which can reduce simulation times and improve efficiency.The paper investigates an optimization design method of the gate position, which can provided a valid reference for realizing further global optimization design of the GES of die casting die.
