More and more emphasis has been laid on the concept of Localization since the movement of post-modernism, especially among fashion world and top designers. Localization comes to be major characteristics and trend of designing for the last few years of 20th century.1980's, Yohji Yamamoto won great fame over the dominant western trend in Paris with his oriental philosophy means and aroused an revolution of fashion world, attracting more and more attention of artists and designers to traditional Japanese culture and aesthetics. While, Chinese culture and traditional arts are more extensive and profound, providing more original inspiration to domestic designs; moreover, Chinese garment industry is making active efforts to transition from labor-intensive to technology-based professional, Therefore, developing localization fashion design is believed to have greater practical significance.This paper discusses the relationship of design and local culture, while studying the work of Yohji Yamamoto, a Japanese designer. Detailed study of Yohji Yamamoto's work begins with its visual image, analyzing the local characteristics of its style, profile type, structure, color, accessories. Purpose of study is to explore cultural understanding of the artist and his works as well as in-depth comparison of Japanese culture and post-modernist design philosophy. The Paper concludes with common methodology of localization design based on traditional culture, aiming at contribution to the development of Chinese garment and fashion industry.
