The increasing emission of malodorous gases by landfills have pose direct or indirect influence on the environment and human health, making the control and treatment of the malodorous gas arising increasing attentions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the emission laws of malodorous gases by landfills, and to find an appropriate in-situ deodorant method accordingly based on the ZhengZhou landfill project. A program for efficient deodorization was further designed to provide technical guidance for the control and treatment of the malodorous gases.H2S and NH3 were selected as the evaluation indexes of landfill malodorous gases and the concentrations of which in the landfill atmosphere was measured. Parameters including locations, temperature inversion effect, temperature, wind speed, humidity and soil-covering on MSW were studied. Selected botanic deodorants were sprayed on landfill and the efficiency of which was studied. The main conclusions can be summarized as follows:(1) The odor intensity of H2S and NH3 in different locations decreased in order of landfill, leachate equalization basin. The intensity was higher at high temperature than low temperature, and was higher at night than during daytime. The concentration of either H2S or NH3 is above the emission standard.(2) The concentration in different locations showed that temperature inversion and temperature had a significant influence on the odor emission, while wind speed, and humidity had a slight one. The concentration of malodors gases can be decreased by covering the soil on MSW.(3) The most efficient way is found to spray the landfill and leachate equalization basin using the botanic deodorizer with a concentration of 400g/m2 on the mornings.(4) To decrease the malodors gases, the program was mainly spraying the botanic deodorizer in the landfill and leachate equalization basin based on the climatic events and weather regimes, with the minimal operation area and a high level of mechanize and on-line monitoring facility.
