A novel gemini sodium nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate(GNPES) was synthesized from nonylphenol, paraformaldehyde, ethylene oxide, sulfamic acid and 30%(w%) aqueous sodium hydroxide by a three-step. The synthesis condition and the yield of GNPES were compared with those of sodium nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate(NPES). The best condition of sulfonic reaction of GNPES was that mole ratio of GNP to sulfamic acid was 1:2.2, the reaction temperature was 115℃and the reaction time was 2.5h, while that of NPES was mole ratio of NP to sulfamic acid was 1:1.1, the reaction temperature was 115℃and the reaction time was 2h. The yield of sulfonic reaction of GNPES was 88%~93%,while that of NPES was 93%~95%.Critical micelle concentration (CMC) of GNPES and NPES surfactant were measured with Wilhelmy-Plate method. The experiment result showed that the CMC of GNPES was 0.0304~0.0782mmol/L, while the CMC of NPES was 0.0609~0.261mmol/L. But the capability of reducing surface tension of the GNPES was almost the same as that of NPES. TheγCMC of GNPES was 38.8~42.2 /mN·m-1 , theγCMC of GNPES was 39.3~45.7 /mN·m-1 .The emulsification capability of GNPES surfactants were investigated and compared with NPES surfactants. It was found that emulsification capability is increasing with hydrophilic group being longer and GNPES-30 has the best emulsification capability. The froth capability of GNPES surfactants were also measured. Result showed that the froth capability is raising and the stabilization of froth is getting better while hydrophilic groups were increasing.Critical aggregation numbers of micelle(Nm)of GNPES surfactants and NPES surfactants were determined by steady-state fluorescence probe method with pyrene as fluorescence probe andbenzophenone as quencher. It was found that when hydrophilic group were longer, Nm of GNPES surfactants and NPES surfactants increased, and the Nm's increasing trend of NPES were stronger than those of GNPES...
