The smelting blast furnace is the most important, economical and effective tool in the production of iron,and it's one of the most effective chemical reactor and heat exchangers, an important link of iron & steel production. Over the years, to address the problem of the blast furnace shell steel, especially the large blast furnace shell, domestic steel companies and a number of research units have finished active researches and development work in this area, and have developed special steels for the shell structure of metallurgical equipment, which have obtained good results during application to practical engineering projects.In this paper, the statistical characteristics of the material properties of the WSM41C, WSM50C steel which are applicable to the special steel shell structure of the smelting equipment are the assessed, based onχ2 and K~S test of its strength data. According to accumulated statistics of the demographic characteristics and the calculation mode of the domestic steel, uniform safety factor is specified as 1.5 in the design formula of the allowable stress. The reliability of the WSM41C, WSM50C steel that applied to the shell structure of iron and steel enterprises'process heaters is preliminarily analyzed with the first-order second moment method, and it is a basis of the design parameters applied to the shell structure of smelting equipment to compile the relevant provisions of"Technical specifications of process furnace in iron and steel enterprise".First of all, the basic concept of engineering structure reliability is introduced and the history of research of reliability theory is reviewed. Some practical methods for analysis of reliability for building structures are evaluated. The influence factors of resistance partial coefficients of the steel constructor's each component are analyzed and the methods for calculating the coefficients of reliability design are proposed. Then, the test data of the WSM41C, WSM50C steel is statistically analyzed and uncertainty of resistant force is studied, focusing on analysis of the reliability of the two grades of steel used in blast furnace shell structure. The influence of the live load average divided by standard value and coefficient of variation on the value ofβis discussed. Finally, the resistance coefficient is calculated according to the value ofβ, and it is compared with the uniform security factor of 1.5.
