Cylinder block and cylinder head are the most important and biggest castings of engine; They are the most important and difficult part for producing the engine. The quality of cylinder block and cylinder head are decided by the level of foundry technics. Computer simulation technology became the most powerful potential tool to promote casting technology; it was also used by actual industry and became the essential ingredient of casting profession. Casting the cylinder block and cylinder head are the most difficult point in casting industry. Through numerical simulation software, we can simulate the process of mold filling and the process of solidification; Then the simulation results could represent the whole process of casting; So the study can guide actual production.In this paper, firstly we using the large orifice discharge theory to design and optimize the running system of cylinder block; On the basis of original design of the running system, we can get another two ameliorative designs. By using UG to found their three-dimensional mold, after that we can found the finite mold by the software of Patran. Then using the finite element simulation software ProCAST to simulate the whole casting process of the cylinder block one by one; Through the simulation, we can get the velocity field and temperature field of mold filling , the temperature field of solidification and forecasting the possibility of shrinkage and porosity. Through considering the mold filling,the solidification,shrinkage and porosity of the three cases which was get from the simulation result, we can find the last design is the best. The third is very peaceful in the mold filling, the temperature field of solidification is uniformity, cooling speed is faster than the others, and the range that could possibly produce shrinkage and porosity is smaller. So the last design can promote the quality of the casting, guide actual production, as well as lower the waste and cost.
