Polymer/Layered Silicate (PLS) nanocomposites are developping rapidly nearly ten years in the emerging cross-cutting science and technology. PLS nanocomposites have broad prospects for development, not only have lightweight, corrosion-resistance, good insulation and easy processing characteristics of polymer materials, but also have high strength, high modulus of inorganic materials. Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) has been an important engineering plastics, widely used in automotive, electronic, electrical and other industries. The recent progress in PBT/OMMT nanocomposites were reviewed. The ideas of organic/inorganic nanocomposite were made to improve the properties of PBT.In this paper, the natural Ca-bentonite was purified, Na-modified and organic modified, the influence of types of organic modifier and pH value on the properties of OMMT were discussed. And the bentonite was characterized by XRD,FTIR and TG. Results indicated that in neutral and subalkalic environment, the excellent OMMT was prepared by use of organic quaternary ammonium cation.PBT/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared by melting intercalation, the structure and interface features of the nanocomposites were characterized by XRD and SEM, and discussed the mechanism of flame retardant. Results showed that adding OMMT can improve flame retarded properties, but the effect was not obvious, co-addition OMMT and fire retardant may play a synergy effect, in the conditions of the flame retarded properties reaching the standard (reach to V-0 level), the amount of fire retardant can be dropped to half. The factors of polymer melt intercalation were analysised, and investigated the mechanism of melt intercalation. By adding a small amount of OMMT can improve the mechanical properties, adding coupling agent can improve the compatibility of OMMT and PBT, adding toughener not only can improve the mechanical properties of PBT, but also can increase the content of OMMT, thereby reducing costs.To further enhance the comprehensive performance of PBT, PBT/PP/OMMT ternary nanocomposites were prepared by use of blending and inorganic modification, improved the processing flow, meanwhile broadened the application scope of PBT resin and enhanced the competitiveness of their products.
