Since the beginning of the 21st century, huge progress in the synthesis and application of new nanomaterials has been made. These materials are quickly expanding into our everyday life. The unique nanoparticles properties, such as high specific surface area and mobility, could potentially lead to unexpected health or environmental hazards .Research on the environmental toxicity of nanotechnological products, in spite of their rapid development, is currently taking its first hesitant steps .Toxic effects of nanoparticles on organisms remain to be evaluated scientifically.In this paper, we have prepared stable ZnSe nanoparticle suspension by the sol-gel method, and use ZnSe nanoparticle to act on onion epidermal cell, and investigate the impact on onion epidermal cell caused by the above mentioned ZnSe nanoparticles with light microscope. Under the light microscope, we find that no significant changes in the shape of nuclei and cells acted on by zinc acetate , it was confirmed that the toxicity of zinc ions on the onion epidermal cell is not clear. The shape of cell acted on by ZnSe nanoparticles have changed clearly. Cell core were damaged, cell wall fractured, nuclear swelled,diffused and ultimately disappeared. It proved that ZnSe is toxicological to onion epidermal cells. The results show that the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles is related to concentration,size of nanoparticles and interaction time of nanoparticles and cell .The results also show that the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles increases with the increasing interaction time of nanoparticles and cell, the same size and greater concentration of nanoparticles are more toxicological to onion epidermal cells, the same concentration and smaller nanoparticles are more toxicological to onion epidermal cells.
