Quaternary ammonium cationic starch has a widely range of applications,for example in the paper,textile,oil,adhesives,mining industry,the cosmetics,especially in water treatment. Cationic starch is expected to replace synthetic polymers which has the effect of carcinogenicity-mutagenicity-teratogenicity.In this paper,quaternary ammonium cationic starch was prepared with starch,Trimethylamine solution and epichlorohydrin.We adopt one-pot to synthesis this type cationic starch.At the same time to improve the flocculation behavior,the cationic starch had a further more modified to obtain more excellent performance of the quaternary ammonium cationic starch derivatives.The synthetic route of the quaternary ammonium cationic in this study starch was short, simple,low cost,less pollution.Corn starch was used as raw materials and water as a reaction solvent.We obtained the optimum conditions of one-pot method.Technology 1:n(ECH):n (AGU)=1,n(TMA):n(AGU)=1.3,n(NaOH):n(AGU)=0.4:1,reaction time was 4h, reaction temperature was 60℃,the solvent was 70 mL,DSQC was up to 0.3,the reaction efficiency was 30%;Technology 2:n(ECH):n(AGU)=1,n(TMA):n(AGU)=1.5,n (NaOH):n(AGU)=0.2:1,the reaction time was 8h,the reaction temperature was 50℃,the solvent was 40 mL,DSQC was up to 0.267,the reaction efficiency was 26.7%;The viscosity performance of the product in this study was superior to the same degree of substitution of quaternary cationic starch which was prepared with the traditional method. We preliminary studied on flocculation of reactive dyes using the traditional wet,dry,one-pot method of quaternary cationic starch.The removal rate of color degree rate was the dry method>the one-pot>the traditional wet.In order to better adapt to industry needs,quaternary cationic starch was compositely modified with cross-linked,hydrophobic benzyl modification.And they were used in disposing waste water from laboratory-simulated,and actual factories.We chose different waste water to deal with.The results showed that a slightly cross-linking could increase the size of flocculation,and the introduction of hydrophobic functionalities is beneficial,resulting in a substantial broadening of flocculation window.
