HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fiber was prepared by the oxidation of linen with sodium periodate and subsequent grafted with HBP-NH2. Firstly, the structure of HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fiber was studied, then salt-free dyeability, antimicrobial properties, anti - UV radiation performance and dressing properties were researched.FT-IR indicated that the aldehyde groups of the oxidized linen fiber have reacted with amino groups of the HBP-NH2. The crystallinity and the onset decomposition temperature of HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fiber decreased.Factors exerting influence on salt-free reactive dyeing behaviours of oxidized linen fabrics grafted with HBP-NH2 were discussed, including oxidized time, concentration of HBP-NH2 solution, pH value, reaction time and temperature. Compared with conventional dyeing, HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fabrics displayed markedly enhanced colour strength when dyed without salt. The washing fastness and levelling properties were satisfactory.HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fabrics showed 90.74% of bacterial reduction to S. aureus and 93.12% of bacterial reduction to E. coli, respectively. The antimicrobial activities of HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fabrics were maintained at 90% reduction level even after being exposed to 20 consecutive home laundering conditions. The UPF value was increased from 3.44 to 13.19. Therefore, HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fabrics owned good antibacterial and anti - UV radiation performance. And the dressing properties of HBP-NH2 grafted oxidized linen fabrics were influenced to some extent.
